Big R Modular Bridges, Bolt-A-Bin® Abutments, Highlands East Municipality, ON

AIL shows duplicate bridge prowess.

When the Municipality of Highlands East needed to replace two bridges on a limited budget, AIL's Big R Modular Steel Bridges with Bolt-A-Bin® abutments trumped all other players on ease and speed of installation and overall cost. That's because AIL's Big R Modular Steel Bridges install in less than half the time of their concrete counterparts and they can save as much as 50% on cost. Strong and crane-friendly, they are engineered and pre-fabricated at our AISC and CWB certified facility to spans up to 45720 mm (150') and with 108 mm (4 ¼") deep galvanized steel deck. Standard features include CHBDC loading, weathering steel finish, bearing plates and pads and curb or guiderail systems. These bridges are also available in painted or hot-dipped galvanized finishes.

Bonus point: project completion in less than two weeks.

The remote location required a cost-effective solution for the bridge abutments, so AIL's Bolt-A-Bin® cellular retaining walls were selected. It took two days each for these to be assembled and filled. Then, the bridges were installed in less than a day at each location - all with minimal environmental impact. AIL's durable Guiderail system was then added to comply with the Ontario safety standards. Finally, an asphalt coating was expertly applied to each bridge deck to complete the project ahead of schedule. Traffic flow across each bridge resumed within hours after the asphalt coating was compacted.

Expert teamwork in bridge replacement and renewal - an AIL strong suit.

No stranger to the world of bridge crossing success, AIL was pleased to collaborate with the Municipality's engineering firm, D.M. Wills Associates Limited, for the second time in as many years to manage another win-win project through its complete cycle. AIL professionals helped determine the most affordable solution during the specification process, added value in the design phase and provided on-site technical support to the project contractor, Royel Paving Limited. AIL's Technical Sales Representative, Barron Wang, E.I.T, supervised the installation and our Regional Engineer, Scott MacRae, P.Eng., conducted the final inspection and authored the letter of compliance. AIL's "grand slam" offering of cost effective solutions, technical expertise and collaborative teamwork made this project a model for other municipalities and townships to follow.
