The City of Edmonton’s QEII Highway and 41st Avenue SW Interchange project opened to traffic in late 2015. The partial cloverleaf interchange carries busy 41st Avenue over Blackmud Creek, the QEII and a major rail corridor. Following several major installations in Western Canada using our Vist-A-Wall MSE Structural Wall System, AIL was the specified supplier for three false abutment walls on the road/rail overpass portion of this project.
An alternative solution for high settlement area
Geotechnical bearing capacity issues were initially thought to be severe enough that two-stage MSE solutions would be required. However, those issues turned out to be less significant and we were able to proceed with a single-stage solution with extended Grid-Strip Soil Reinforcement to address the geotechnical global stability.
Our Grid-Strips really went the distance
The versatility of our Grid-Strip Soil Reinforcement System shone on this project. The strip lengths ranged from 3.9 m to 23.7 m. For longer lengths they were supplied in two sections and spliced on site to form the full length required.
And so did our on-site representation
Project specifications required a full-time, on-site representative from the MSE supplier and we were happy to oblige. Our representative helped the contractors interpret the engineering drawings, ensured that product delivery logistics flowed smoothly and issued daily and weekly written reports.
Vist-A-Wall MSE Panel installation started in August 2014 and continued into the fall. After a winter shutdown it was restarted in the spring and completed in June of 2015. The Interchange was opened to traffic in November of 2015.
