At the 2007 World Steel Symposium, AIL’s Big R received the National Steel Bridge Alliance Bridge Award for a 143 m (470') long by 13.4 m (44') wide steel bridge constructed on Hwy 36 in Watkins, Colorado. This national award for the short span category honours significant and innovative steel bridges constructed within the U.S.
The innovative, six-span steel bridge crossing Box Elder Creek showcased the viability of using standard rolled-beam sections as a competitive alternative to precast concrete. The simple-span-made-continuous technique was used with a innovative continuity detail providing an especially economical, low-maintenance and visually appealing bridge.
Other team members that shared the award were:
- Structures, Inc., Englewood, CO (General Contractor)
- Colorado Department of Transportation (Owner/Designer)
