Polymer-Coated Box Culvert replaces failing NL concrete bridge

Constructed in the early 1970s and refurbished in the late 1980s, the old concrete bridge over Northeast Brook in Trepassey, NL was undeniably a candidate for full replacement by 2015.

That’s when the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Transportation and Works (NLDTW) said 'enough was enough' and replaced it with a new Polymer-Coated Super•Cor Box Culvert with Vist-A-Wall Wingwalls from AIL. No doubt the prospect of a 75+ year design service life was too good to refuse.

Province’s Mabey detour bridge drops in for a piggyback
We ran into a kindred spirit on this project when the Province’s own Mabey Compact 200 Modular Panel Bridge showed up to help with the traffic diversion. Our AIL Group sister company, Algonquin Bridge, is the exclusive distributor for the popular Mabey Bridge systems for the Canadian sales or rental markets. In this case, the Compact 200 was installed piggyback-style, on top an even older concrete bridge just upstream from this site.

Structural Plate has a strong history in Newfoundland and Labrador
Our NL operations are always strong performers in our Canada-wide network. Structural Plate is a natural for the harsh environments and remote locations of this rugged region. Our corrosion/abrasion-resistant Dur•A•Span Aluminum has been a mainstay in the coastal zones (especially Box Culverts), but Super•Cor and Bolt-A-Plate have also been a big part of it. Plus, our first installation using Ultra•Cor — the world’s strongest structural steel plate — was near Corner Brook in 2013.
