AIL Group’s T&B Structural Systems recently completed a unique and equally impressive-looking bridge approach/overpass project located at Andrews Avenue in Broward County (Fort Lauderdale), FL. The project consisted of two approach ramps totaling 18,151 m2 (59,550 sq. ft.) of Vist-A-Wall MSE retaining wall reaching a maximum height of 11.3 m (37.5'). Vist•A•Walls were chosen in part for their cost-effectiveness, favourable equipment and labour requirements, and their fast and straightforward installation process.
The approach ramps were composed of pile-supported abutments with supporting wing walls. Because the bridge was skewed at an angle to the road it was crossing, each abutment had an acute angle of only 32 degrees, which was no problem for Vist-A-Wall – they adapt extremely well to curves, angles and steps, and can reach heights of over 30 m (100'). The acute corners required special design considerations and used a bin design method that joined the abutment and wing walls together using flat steel reinforcement bars that were bolted to the back of the segmental concrete panels in conjunction with soil restraining reinforcement.
