Mission Creek Regional Park is a 92-hectare nature reserve located in the centre of Kelowna, BC. The park contains over 12 km of hiking trails including a self-guided interpretation trail featuring two crossings over the Creek — one of which was in dire need of replacement.
The City originally tendered for a complete re-building of the existing Cottonwoods Bridge. However, Landmark, a contractor well-versed in the economical advantages of AIL’s Prefabricated Bridges, approached us to confirm our costs and went back to the City with a very attractive alternative. They recognized the opportunity and moved on it right away.
A beautiful bridge for a beautiful place
Aesthetics were important in such a beautiful setting and we recommended a gently cambered truss design with naturally weathering steel finish and timber decking which totally suited its natural surroundings.
Initially a little hesitant on the finish, City officials came to view the “low-to-no” maintenance costs as a real bonus.
City officials also came to view the installation, with no fewer than a half dozen representatives watching keenly, as it was slid into place with an excavator at one end and a massive tow truck at the other. They were amazed at the ease of installation and the perfect fit.
They also told us how much they appreciated Landmark thinking outside the box and coming back to them with an attractive alternative to their original complete re-build plan.
