George Freeman Trail is a major range road forming the Eastern perimeter of Strathmore, Alberta, just east of Calgary. An aging wooden bridge structure was in dire need of replacement, but the work had to happen in a tight, late fall timeframe.
The waterway is part of the Western Irrigation District’s canal system, which needs to remain open from May 1 to October 1 each year. Bridge removal, culvert installation, backfilling and paving had to be done outside of this window, so time was of the essence.
Culverts ready to ship within two weeks
A buried culvert solution using two large Corrugated Steel Pipes from AIL was selected and we had the culverts ready to ship within two weeks of receiving the order. The contractor on the Project was Golden Triangle Construction Management, out of Calgary.
Buried solution brings benefits
Moving to a buried solution brought several benefits to the Town in the process. Their new 3.5 mm thick galvanized Corrugated Steel Pipe crossing is a very low-maintenance solution with no sandblasting or painting required in its future. There are no decking or joints at the road surface to maintain, and the continuous road surface is safer with no early freezing hazard. The wider crossing also offers a 2.5 m walking surface on one side of the roadway and the beveled ends contour to the canal banks, eliminating the need for headwalls.
Construction was entering the final phases at time of writing, but feedback from Golden Triangle representatives indicated that they were happy with the quick delivery and ease of installation.
A high quality corrugated metal pipe that is built to last
Corrugated Steel Pipe from AIL is the material of choice for new or replacement culvert projects, reline projects and many other applications. It will not crack under impact loads or vibrations due to the inherent strength of steel and the flexibility of the corrugated pipe section.
