Irving Woodlands, a major forestry operation in Eastern Canada, needed to find an economical and expedient solution to replace an old bridge on their industrial road network in a remote area of central New Brunswick. They selected a packaged solution from our AIL Group sister company, Algonquin Bridge, featuring one of their new, made-in-Canada R800 Modular Panel Bridge Systems and our Bolt-A-Bin Abutments.
AIL’s Bolt-A-Bin Retaining Wall System is a cellular metal bin wall system that surrounds a compacted mass of granular material. The cells are formed from strong, corrugated metal components that have Galvanized and Aluminized Type 2 performance coatings for long-lasting service.
Strong and flexible cellular metal bin wall system
The bin walls can be filled with locally available fill material. The filled metal shells act as a gravity cribwall to resist surcharged loading, sliding and overturning of the earth behind it. This combination of strong, corrugated metal and soil mass provides a sturdy and dependable retaining wall or bridge abutment solution. Bolt-A-Bin’s flexible design adjusts to minor ground movement without cracking or bulging.
Bridge replacement part of major forestry road network upgrade
The old bridge, which had been closed for over ten years, was being replaced as part of a major road network upgrade to handle larger off-road hauling trucks.
Each abutment structure was four bins wide (each bin is 3 m wide) plus additional wingwall bins at a 30° angle. The western abutment was 17 modules high (6.9 m), while the eastern one was 14 modules high (5.7 m).
Bridge/abutment package was an economical and expedient solution
We were pleased to partner with Algonquin Bridge on this project as part of their packaged solution. Our Bolt-A-Bin Abutments supported their heavy-duty, made-in-Canada R800 Modular Panel Bridge System which delivers a 100-tonne design load to support 12′-wide, off-highway logging trucks. With limited need for concrete, this package solution was a very economical and expedient solution for this remote area.
