A 68 m long Super-Cor mine portal was recently installed at Stornoway’s Renard Mine in Quebec’s far north — but the structure took a rather long route to get there.
That’s because this structure was originally purchased in 2010 by another mining operation but was never assembled. Stornoway had bought the structure from the other mining company in 2013 and stored it in their asset inventory until they were ready to use it on the Renard site.
Novice plate crew completes assembly ahead of schedule
The contractor’s crew on this project consisted of underground miners with no previous plate assembly experience. An AIL Mining Representative was on hand for guidance during the assembly start-up week.
Everything went very smoothly and the assembly was completed ahead of schedule. The owner and the contractor were both impressed by the ease and speed of the installation and commented very favourably on their first Super-Cor experience.
About Stornoway’s Renard Mine
The Renard Mine is located approximately 250 km north of the Cree community of Mistissini and 350 km north of Chibougamau in the James Bay region of north-central Québec. The mine is the first diamond mine in Quebec, and one of only six in Canada. Now in commercial production, the mine is expected to produce an average of 1.6 million carats per year over an initial 14-year mine life, representing approximately 2% of the global supply.
