Hensall, Ontario, is a small agricultural community in the Bluewater Municipality of Huron County. When a failed concrete box culvert needed to be replaced on a line road, the municipality selected an AIL Super-Cor Box solution. Including the installation, this choice saved them over 60% versus a new concrete box. With the savings realized, they were able to tender another bridge project.
Box Culverts made from our Super-Cor Structural Steel Plate are the perfect transportation infrastructure solution for long-span, low-rise applications with shallow cover requirements, like this one. Their wide-span, open-bottom designs allow for natural streambeds and excellent open-flow hydraulic properties — important factors in resilience to extreme weather events and washouts associated with climate change.
Buried metal bridge installs in six days, catches up schedule
This structure used time-saving precast concrete footings over the prepared foundation. Unfortunately, our precast partner was running late with their delivery. To help keep the project on schedule, the municipality’s team pre-assembled the Super-Cor rings (which were delivered ahead of schedule) in an adjacent laydown area — ready to be lifted into place when the footings arrived.
Once the footings arrived, the rings were installed and the structure was backfilled in just six days — catching up on the schedule so the overall project was still completed on time.
The municipality was pleased with how AIL supported them and kept communication open throughout the manufacturing, delivery and installation processes. This led to them tendering another structure and awarding it to AIL. It will be delivered and installed in the fall of 2024.
