Maddox Cove is a very picturesque fishing village on the eastern shore of the Avalon Peninsula near the city of St. John’s, NL. When a failing culvert structure along the shore road needed to be replaced, the project partners did what so many other NL communities have done — they opted to go with a long-lasting, corrosion/abrasion-resistant Dur-A-Span aluminum structure from AIL.
This coastal location was a perfect application for AIL’s Dur-A-Span to demonstrate its strengths — the ability to stand up to pounding saltwater surf and scour challenges, which it’s capable of doing for 75 years and more. In this case, it was a wide-mouthed Pipe Arch Culvert with a protective cast-in-place concrete headwall on the ocean side, and a sloping cut-bevel on the inland side that met the requirements best.
Geometry needed to accommodate existing sanitary sewer line
There was an existing sanitary sewer line above the existing culvert and we had to collaborate with the consultant, SNC Lavalin, to determine that the geometry we used would not interfere with the location of this line.
In fact, we worked with them right from the concept stage to the tendering process. This ensured they had a good knowledge of the structure cost and delivery timelines. We also worked closely with the contractor, Dexter Construction, from the bid stage through final construction to ensure things went smoothly. Post-project contact with SNC Lavalin confirmed that the owner was very happy with the structure.
