As part of the twinning of busy Highway 103 on Nova Scotia’s South Shore, a new access road and underpass structure was required for local residents to reach Vinegar Lake and other areas north of the highway near Hubbards.
Two-stage solution perfect for this buried arch bridge construction
An AIL Super-Cor Box Culvert with Best•Kote Polymer Coating and MSE Precast Panel Headwalls was selected for this two-stage construction project for the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (NSTIR). The portion of the structure for the new westbound lanes was completed first with a temporary MSE Wire Wall on the median side. Then it served as the detour while the existing highway was excavated for the installation of the second stage of the structure (for the eastbound lanes), which has been completed as well.
Bridge construction goes smoothly with experienced partners
Working with a familiar team is always beneficial and we were fortunate to be a returning design-and-supply partner with familiar and experienced project counterparts: NSTIR, Dexter Construction, Atlantic Underground Services and Harbourside Geotechnical Consultants.
An aggressive schedule and tight site conditions along a very busy highway were challenging, but good communication during pre-tender, tender, award, planning, scheduling, manufacturing, delivery and installation stages of this project helped to keep everything rolling smoothly. Dexter was pleased with the ease of assembly which occurred without delays or unforeseen site issues.
Over the past few years, NSTIR has seen the benefits of including AIL’s efficient packaged solutions of buried metal bridges and MSE walls in their tender calls on Highways 101, 103 and 107, with our infrastructure now in place at Windsor, Ingramport, East River and on the new Burnside/Bedford/Sackville Connector taking shape in Dartmouth.
