When the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure required a replacement for the Lawrence Pond Brook Culvert on route 2, km 33, near Conception Bay South, they turned to AIL’s Bolt-A-Plate Round for a durable solution.
Since this was a major excavation with approximately 10–11 m of cover, AIL’s Best-Kote coating provided added value to the owner. Including the diameter of the Bolt-A-Plate structure, the excavation reached approximately 14–15 m from the surface to the foundation of the structure. The owner also incorporated fish baffles along the invert to help maintain proper fish passage through the crossing. This approach combined the structural requirements of a deep-fill installation with an environmentally responsible design that supports stream habitat.
A collaborative approach from design to delivery
AIL worked with the owner during the early design stages to evaluate options for the stream crossing, including both re-lining and full replacement. Once the project was tendered, we supported contractors during the bidding process and continued working closely with the successful contractor, Black Diamond Construction Ltd., through completion.
The structure was delivered to the site in early September 2025, with installation completed in two phases. The first half of the structure was installed in fall 2025, with the second phase completed in spring 2026.
Innovative installation under challenging conditions
Because of site conditions and project timelines, Black Diamond assembled the structure on a portion of the closed roadway adjacent to the installation site. A crane then lifted the pre-assembled sections into position, where they were joined to form the completed structure.
Construction also faced an unexpected challenge when forest fires in the vicinity forced the jobsite to close for approximately two to three weeks. Despite the interruption, AIL’s early coordination, responsive support and on-schedule delivery helped keep the project moving.
