The New Brunswick Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (NBDTI) needed to address a deteriorated culvert at McQuade Brook in Scotch Settlement. Rather than going with a full replacement, they opted to rehabilitate the structure.
This involved protecting the structure’s invert area with a concrete infill, removing the bevelled ends and adding two rings of 4.3 m Bolt-A-Plate Round on the inlet end and four on the outlet end. In addition, concrete cut-off walls and headwalls were added at the ends to help prevent scouring and to accommodate a fish ladder.
Great care was taken to get the precise diameter of Bolt-A-Plate to marry up to a competitor’s older product. The attachment went quite well, but the old culvert was a bit deformed at the top and a little effort was required to adjust it to line up with our new plate.
Thanks to clear communication with our AIL team and the contractor, Caldwell & Ross, all expectations were understood and met. Our materials arrived at the site ahead of schedule and the project progressed smoothly with no significant challenges.
